Fashion Trivia: The Flannel Shirt

When we talk about essentials, the first thing that comes up to our heads in terms of men’s clothing is probably the oxford shirt. However, when you really think about it, there aren’t a lot of men that wear oxford shirts on a day-to-day basis. The shirt has grown to be a more mature or formal choice for many young men; hence it is avoided unless they go to formal occasions or only worn to professional work environments. The dress code for men nowadays have gone more casual and relaxed. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but with changing times, the world of fashion just has to adjust itself. The adjustment we think comes in the form of The Flannel Shirt. Casual, easy to throw on, and more often than not, it’s the perfect outerwear in uncertain weathers.

The Flannel shirt has grown as a must-have in a man’s wardrobe, its hard to avoid and you can see everyone wear it in most places outside. The flannel isn’t the type of shirt or the type of pattern, but it is the type of material used to construct the shirt. It traces back to late 17^th century Wales, where textile workers used leftover sheep’s wool to create a type of fabric that was comfortable and warm. Thanks to its comfort and function, it grew in popularity in England and France, and as more time passes, its popularity spread in a global way. This was also thanks to the 90s and 00s rock artists that wore these shirts on stage and helped it to become what it is today.

Although classic flannels of the past were thick and not suited for hotter climates, nowadays there are a lot of modern renditions to the classic flannel shirt, and Smith Berlin provides this modern twist in our flannel series, still paying homage to the traditional plaid patterns, but suited to the hot and humid climate in Indonesia.
